Ukraine is ready for a sea truce in the Black Sea based on plans from Egypt, India and Turkey, and now waits for a reply from Russia.
The UN Meeting
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made this statement on Wednesday at the Crimean Platform summit during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The war is now in its fifth year, and Ukraine fears Russia will attack power and heating sites this winter. Cargo shipping in the Black Sea is almost stopped due to heavy attacks on ships and ports by both sides. Mr. Zelenskyy met U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday to talk about an energy and grain ceasefire. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also said after meeting Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that both sides showed interest in a limited ceasefire for grain and energy.
Russian Response
Russia has not given any public sign that it will agree to this truce. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated earlier that there are no grounds for wider peace talks right now, though Russia remains open to them. Meanwhile, top wheat buyers in Asia, West Asia and Africa are struggling to get supplies, pushing global wheat prices up.
ExplainerWhy this matters
What Happened
Ukraine announced it is open to a limited ceasefire in the Black Sea and energy sector based on proposals by Egypt, India and Turkey, while the U.S. confirmed both Russia and Ukraine show some interest in grain and energy truces.
Why It Matters
Safe passage for ships in the Black Sea is vital for food security and global wheat supplies in Asia, West Asia and Africa. Protecting energy infrastructure also prevents severe humanitarian crises during winter months when heating systems are targeted.
What Happens Next
It remains unclear if Russia will officially accept the maritime truce terms, as the Kremlin maintains there are no immediate grounds for wider peace negotiations.
