A deep low‑pressure system will bring heavy rain to Kolkata and much of South Bengal for the next four days, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) warned. The system is strengthening into a deep low, raising the chance of intense showers across the region. IMD listed 24 Parganas, Medinipur and Jhargram as districts likely to see very heavy rain, while Purulia, Birbhum and parts of Howrah also face strong downpours. In North Bengal, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Bihar are forecast to receive heavy rain as the system moves northward. Coastal states Odisha and Andhra Pradesh are also expected to experience heavy rain. The department has issued an orange alert for the affected district and warned of gusty winds, especially over the Sundarbans and other coastal zones. Police have begun broadcast warnings in the Sundarbans, and authorities are increasing surveillance on river dams and coastal areas. Fishermen have been barred from going out to sea until Friday, and beach‑going tourists have been advised to stay cautious. Residents along the coast have been told to remain alert as the rain and wind intensify. IMD will continue to monitor the system and update forecasts over the four‑day period.
