A low-pressure area has formed over the east-central and adjoining south-east Bay of Bengal and is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm by Monday morning, October 26. The India Meteorological Department states that the system will move towards the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts.
Official Warnings
Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority Managing Director Prakhar Jain urged farmers and the public to take early safety steps and told fishermen to return to the coast immediately. The IMD issued alerts for heavy to very heavy rain in districts including Alluri Sitharama Raju, Kakinada, East Godavari, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema, Eluru, West Godavari, and NTR, alongside Yanam, for October 27 and 28. Ten other districts, including Visakhapatnam, are under a weather watch for heavy rain.
Recent Weather Impact
Heavy rain already hit Nellore and Prakasam districts on Thursday, causing waterlogging in low-lying zones and traffic jams for commuters. Thottambedu in Tirupati district recorded 40.2 mm of rain, while Rapur in Nellore recorded 40 mm in the 24 hours leading up to Thursday morning.
Context
Post-monsoon storms in the Bay of Bengal frequently bring heavy rainfall and rough sea conditions to the eastern coast of India during this time of year. Weather agencies track these systems days in advance to issue warnings and help coastal authorities prepare for potential disruptions.
