UPDATE - follow-up to Several feared dead in firecracker factory blast in Bihar's Siwan district: At least four people were killed on Friday in a massive explosion at a house operating as a firecracker manufacturing unit in Bihar's Siwan district, with authorities warning the death toll could rise further. The blast took place in Alampur village under the Jamo police station jurisdiction as workers prepared items for the upcoming Deepavali festival.

Official Response

Siwan Superintendent of Police Bharat Soni and district magistrate Vijay Prakash Meena rushed to the site, where rescue operations are under way under the supervision of town Sub-Divisional Officer Ashutosh Kumar Gupta. District magistrate Meena stated that officials have located mangled and dismembered body parts while working to identify the victims. Police reported that flames quickly engulfed stored explosives inside the premises, triggering a chain of secondary blasts that echoed intermittently for about two hours.

Local Accounts

Locals identified the blast site as the home of Mohammad Amiruddin Mian, described as a noted firecracker trader where manufacturing had reportedly continued for several years. Unconfirmed reports indicated that family members of Mr. Mian may also be among the dead. A local resident named Junaid Rizvi described a horrific scene where body parts were thrown into the air and strewn across the area by the force of the explosion. Security forces have cordoned off the entire zone.

Context

Accidental explosions at illegal or poorly regulated firecracker manufacturing units frequently occur across India ahead of major festivals when demand spikes. These workshops often operate in residential areas without adequate safety measures or proper storage controls for explosive materials. Such incidents highlight ongoing enforcement challenges regarding local licensing and safety compliance in rural manufacturing hubs.
