Jio Platforms Ltd's initial public offering drew more than 10 million applications over its three-day subscription window, marking the highest number for any share sale in Indian history while securing bids worth 4.9 trillion rupees.

Subscription Details

The 30,213-crore rupee offering was subscribed 22.19 times by Friday according to the BSE, with demand well past the shares reserved for institutional investors. Foreign institutional investors placed bids worth 1.39 trillion rupees, subscribing to their reserved portion 25 times even while being net sellers in the secondary market. The country's largest-ever IPO was fully subscribed within 100 minutes of opening on Wednesday, 21 October. Retail investors placed 2.72 times more bids, while non-institutional investors put in 14 times more bids. Backed by Reliance Industries Ltd, the company counts Meta Platforms Inc. and Google parent Alphabet Inc. among its investors and is led by Akash Ambani, the eldest son of Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani.

Market Response

The blockbuster response serves as a test of investor appetite for large listings while Indian equities have lagged behind other Asian markets. Manick Wadhwa, executive director at SKI Capital Services Ltd, noted that strong demand reflects available institutional capital waiting to be deployed despite pressure from rising bond yields, rupee depreciation, and geopolitical tensions. Mohit Mehra, head of equity capital markets at Zerodha Corporate Advisors, pointed out that the record applications exceeding one crore, especially from retail buyers during a weak market, highlight the scale of the success. Jio Platforms reported 533.3 million customers as of June 2026, holding a 50% share of wireless broadband and 42.6% of fixed broadband according to Emkay Global Financial Services. The company also maintains the largest 5G customer base outside China and carries roughly 60% of India's wireless data traffic, while consolidated revenue grew at a compound annual growth rate of 15.8% between fiscal year 2024 and fiscal year 2026.

Use of Proceeds

The share sale consisted entirely of a fresh issue priced between 1,065 and 1,119 rupees per share. Out of the proceeds, 27,500 crore rupees will go toward repaying or prepaying borrowings at subsidiary Reliance Jio Infocomm to lower financing costs. On 23 October, the grey-market premium stood at 255 rupees, pointing to a potential listing gain of 22.79% according to IPO Watch. Independent market analyst Ambareesh Baliga noted that attention will now turn to whether institutional demand sustains after listing and how markets react to geopolitical events.

Context

Initial public offerings allow private companies to raise capital by selling shares to the public and listing on stock exchanges. Large share sales in India are often closely watched as barometers of domestic liquidity and foreign investor confidence amid shifting macroeconomic conditions.
