External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar stated in New York on Tuesday that developing nations face global crises in the front row while remaining in the back row of decision-making. Speaking at the High-Level Meeting of Like-Minded Global South Countries and Friends during the 81st United Nations General Assembly, he noted that old global institutions still reflect past power structures during a time of widespread uncertainty.
Global Challenges
Jaishankar pointed to ongoing conflicts, broken supply chains, rising trade barriers, climate shocks, and pressure on international law as major threats. He stated that global multilateralism is being dismantled when it is needed most. He also urged developing countries to reject chokepoints in supply chains, finance, and connectivity, adding that energy security and prices must not be used for political manipulation.
Diplomatic Meetings
Leading the Indian delegation at the UNGA, Jaishankar chaired the meeting themed 'Navigating Together Towards a Brighter Future – the Compelling Case for an Empowered Global South', which was organized according to the Ministry of External Affairs. Participating nations shared concerns over weakening multilateral bodies and pushed for United Nations reforms. Jaishankar also joined foreign ministers from G4 nations India, Brazil, Germany, and Japan to discuss a reformed UN Security Council. Additionally, Jaishankar participated in an India-UAE-France trilateral meeting covering AI, space, health sciences, energy, and culture. He met with Nepalese counterpart Shisir Khanal, Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Philippines' Foreign Affairs Secretary Theresa Lazaro, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, and Italy's Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani to discuss regional conflicts and economic ties. US President Donald Trump also voiced strong support for the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor during discussions in New York.
