RBI Deputy Governor sees room for rupee recovery amid strong economic growth

The Reserve Bank of India expects Indian financial markets to improve over time, with a strong case for the rupee to recover some of its recent losses against the dollar. RBI Deputy Governor Poonam Gupta stated at the State Bank of India's Banking and Economic Conclave in Mumbai on Wednesday that factors like falling dependence on imported crude oil, strong economic growth, a more favourable capital account, and a reduced current account deficit will drive this market improvement. Gupta noted that the rupee's depreciation over the past year and a half is a temporary overcorrection, pointing out that the central bank remains committed to orderly conditions in the foreign exchange market. The rupee has fallen about 6% to 7% against the dollar in 2026, driven by high crude prices and capital flight from equities. Meanwhile, Securities and Exchange Board of India chief Tuhin Kanta Pandey stated at the conclave that the regulator is considering longer-tenure derivatives products to encourage healthy investor participation. SEBI is also open to reviewing and potentially lowering margin requirements for these longer-tenure products to promote long-term participation in the Futures and Options market. Pandey's comments follow a recent regulatory study showing that nearly nine in ten individual traders faced losses in 2025-26, with the average loss per trader rising 2% year-on-year. At the same event, Pramod Kumar Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, emphasized the need to balance lending and economic growth. Mishra warned that credit must be judged against project economics rather than the enthusiasm of the moment to prevent a repeat of excessive lending and stressed assets. His remarks arrive as banking system liquidity sits around Rs 4.5 lakh crore to Rs 5 lakh crore following central bank open market bond purchases and variable rate reverse repo operations.
