Fox Nation is facing heavy criticism online for its new three-part series titled Houdini: Back from the Dead, which is fully generated by artificial intelligence. The show debuted on October 14 to bring the famous illusionist Harry Houdini back to life ahead of the 100th anniversary of his death on October 31, 1926.

Show Details

The series follows the life of the illusionist through his own words, looking at a childhood marked by a violent accident and difficult family relations, along with the daring feats he performed for audiences. The AI-generated persona of Houdini appears like a documentary subject answering questions to a camera. This project marks the larger Fox News banner's first step into fully AI-generated content. Lauren Petterson, who serves as president of Fox Nation, defended the project by stating that it explores new creative ground by using emerging technology to bring a historical figure to life for modern audiences. She also noted that the show remains rooted in extensive research and historical accuracy, as reported by Variety.

Viewer Backlash

Many internet users have strongly condemned the release. One online user criticized Fox for using AI for everything, while another simply stated they did not want to watch the AI Houdini project. Other viewers called the show clap-trap necromancy and labeled it as AI slop.

Production Facts

The series was produced by Red Rock Films. The production team used over 400 licensed photographs and archival footage, while human actors served as stand-ins before AI transformed them into figures from Houdini's life such as his wife Bess, his mother, brother, and friends. Humans wrote the script using diaries, books, and letters, and experts verified the historical points. The character voices combined human and AI audio.

Context

Artificial intelligence tools are increasingly being adopted across the entertainment industry for creative and historical projects, but the practice often sparks intense public debate. While creators point to new storytelling possibilities and archival enhancement, audiences frequently question the ethical boundaries of recreating deceased historical figures through synthetic media.
