Marvel Returns Avengers Endgame to Theatres With New Footage Linking to Upcoming Movie

Marvel Studios has brought Avengers: Endgame back to theatres as Avengers: Endgame Encore, featuring new footage designed to connect directly to the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday. The re-release hits theatres on September 25, while Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to release on December 18. The original 2019 movie remains mostly the same, as the newly added material runs for only a few minutes.

Early Reviews

Early reviews offer mixed opinions on the added scenes. The National describes the new material as more convincing than expected, with critic William Mullally highlighting a Loki sequence involving Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter. ComicBook.com takes a more critical stance, questioning how naturally the extra scenes fit into the original film and noting that some of the best new material happens before the movie even begins. FilmiFeed describes the footage as brief, noting it mainly serves to bridge Endgame and Doomsday while questioning if revisiting the original ending was needed. Rotten Tomatoes lists the re-release under the original Endgame page without a separate audience score, though fan reactions vary from finding the additions a nice value setup to feeling the footage was less than expected while still enjoying the theatrical experience.

New Scenes

The extended release includes several specific additions that link to the future film. The extended ending brings Tom Hiddleston's character Loki into the story of Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter. Another sequence features Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner alongside Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, accompanied by a TVA scene dealing with the multiverse and incursions. The re-release concludes with a final Doctor Doom sequence that intentionally mirrors the Iron Man origins of Tony Stark.
