Renault India has teased its upcoming E-Tech strong-hybrid powertrain for the Duster SUV, with an official launch date set for October 17th. The new hybrid variant joins the SUV's existing 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engines. The teaser campaign takes direct aim at diesel vehicles with the message, "Dear Diesel, thank you for the ride, we will take it from here," positioning the hybrid as the successor to the diesel engines that drove the nameplate's earlier Indian success. Under the hood, the Duster strong hybrid pairs a naturally aspirated 1,789cc four-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motors, a multi-mode automatic gearbox, and a 1.4 kWh battery pack. The setup produces 160 hp and 172 Nm of torque under the Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 designation. Renault states the system can deliver up to 80% electric driving in city conditions, though this depends on traffic, battery charge, and driving habits. Because it is a strong hybrid, it does not need external charging, relying instead on petrol-electric management and regenerative braking. The hybrid enters the market as Renault faces four consecutive months of sales declines. Duster sales fell from a peak of 2,359 units in April down to 1,267 in May, 1,011 in June, 512 in July, and 402 in August. August volumes dropped 21.48% month-on-month and about 83% from the April high. Total sales across March to August reached 6,953 units, with the SUV competing against rivals like the Creta, Seltos, Grand Vitara, Hyryder, and Sierra. The new hybrid will compete directly with strong-hybrid versions of the Maruti Grand Vitara, Maruti Victoris, and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder, which cost between Rs 16.5 lakh and Rs 20 lakh. The current petrol Duster lineup ranges from Rs 10.49 lakh to Rs 18.69 lakh, but hybrid pricing and certified Indian fuel-efficiency figures remain unannounced ahead of the October release.
