India holds a sensational lead against Panama in an international football friendly at Bengaluru's Sree Kanteerava Stadium. Ranked 138th in the world, the Indian team surprised observers by taking a one-goal advantage against a Panama side placed 44th, which recently made waves at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Opening Goal
Ryan Williams scored the breakthrough goal for the hosts during the first half after latching onto a simple ball over the top of the Panama defence and firing past the goalkeeper. The match marks the first of three high-profile friendlies for India, with upcoming fixtures scheduled against Brazil and Uruguay at Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium. Before today's fixture, Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar greeted the players on the field.
First-Half Action
India created multiple scoring chances through aggressive pressing, with Ashique Kuruniyan and Manvir Singh also testing the opposition. Goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu captained the side and wore the armband in place of Sandesh Jhingan, while Bijoy Varghese filled in defensively. Despite high ticket prices leaving visible empty pockets in the stands, the sparse crowd roared in support as the hosts kept Panama largely toothless during the opening period.
