The Coffee Board has developed new sustainability standards and is currently working to put the certification process in place. Kurma Rao, who serves as the Chief Executive Officer and Secretary of the Board, shared this update. India holds the position of the world's seventh-largest coffee producer and fifth-largest exporter. During the 2025-26 period, the country exported coffee valued at over $2 billion, and value-added products made up nearly 39 percent of that total. Traditional shade-grown farming gives Indian coffee a special advantage, and the Board plans to use these new rules to highlight that benefit. The certification process will happen in three distinct stages. First, the Board will handle certification based on forms filled out by the growers themselves. Next, independent third parties will check and verify the details. Finally, the system will compare Indian standards against well-known global sustainability frameworks.
