The Crash
A 55-year-old or 56-year-old scooter rider named Jayabalakrishnan was killed early Sunday on Container Road at Cheranalloor in Ernakulam district after a luxury car allegedly driven by a 17-year-old boy rammed his vehicle from behind. The victim, who ran a small eatery at Chittur, died on the spot from his injuries while returning home around 2:20 a.m. near a car showroom at Maraparambu. The car was travelling from Vallarpadam towards Kalamassery in the same direction as the scooter.
Police Action
Cheranalloor police have taken the minor driver into custody and registered a case against him under Sections 106(1) and 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for causing death by negligence and rash driving. According to The Hindu, the car is registered in the name of Reno Francis Xavier, First Additional District Judge of the Irinjalakuda Magistrate Court, while Indian Express notes the father is an additional district judge in Thrissur district. Police are currently checking vehicle owner liability and awaiting a medical report to see if the teenager was under the influence of alcohol.
Family Allegations
Relatives of the deceased have alleged that the judicial officer intervened to shield his son, who they claim lacks a valid driving licence. A relative named Jayalakshmi stated that the judge reached the police station after the crash and threatened family members when questioned about allowing a minor to drive. The family also accused authorities of quickly removing the car from the scene to destroy evidence. This tragedy follows a recent accident in Nedumbassery where three youths died after an over-speeding luxury car driven by a 19-year-old hit a two-wheeler.
Context
Legal provisions in India hold vehicle owners and guardians accountable when minors drive motor vehicles, carrying potential prison terms and fines under the Motor Vehicles Act. Road safety laws strictly prohibit underage driving due to the high risk of fatal accidents on busy highways. Incidents involving luxury vehicles and young drivers frequently spark public debate regarding accountability and the enforcement of traffic rules across the country.
