UPDATE - follow-up to Man killed in Kochi as luxury car, allegedly driven by judge's minor son, hits scooter: Police have taken into custody a 17-year-old boy following a fatal crash on Container Road in Cheranalloor, Ernakulam district. The teenager, identified as the son of a senior judge, allegedly drove a luxury car that struck a scooter from behind at roughly 2:20 a.m. on Sunday. The collision resulted in the immediate death of the scooter rider, 55-year-old Jayabalakrishnan, who operated a small food shop in Chittur and was heading home at the time. Law enforcement officials booked the minor under specific provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Sections 106(1) for causing death by negligence and 281 for rash driving. Family members of the victim raised serious allegations against the judicial officer, claiming he visited the police station and threatened relatives who confronted him over the incident. Relatives also alleged that authorities quickly removed the vehicle from the crash site to tamper with evidence, and that the teenager lacked a valid driving permit. Investigators are currently processing procedures to establish the vehicle owner's legal liability and awaiting medical test results to determine if alcohol was involved. The luxury vehicle is officially registered under the name of Reno Francis Xavier, First Additional District Judge at the Irinjalakuda Magistrate Court, while sources also place the father as an additional district judge in Thrissur district.

Context

Accidents involving underage drivers and high-end vehicles draw intense public scrutiny, particularly regarding accountability under motor vehicle laws. Under legal precedents in Kerala, guardians and registered owners of vehicles driven by juveniles face potential prosecution and penalties for permitting underage operation.
