A Congress worker at the center of party chief Mallikarjun Kharge's recent controversial remarks claims he was misunderstood and physically attacked by fellow party members. Santosh Kumar, a resident of Chhapra, stated that he was trying to argue that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would not step down unless the Congress staged a major revolt. Kumar alleged that people mistook him for a Bharatiya Janata Party supporter and assaulted him before he could finish speaking. He maintained that his statement was cut short and taken completely out of context, adding that he genuinely wants to see Modi removed from power.
The Incident
The controversy began when Kharge was speaking at Bapu Sabhagar in Patna during a program marking the 139th birth anniversary of Bihar's first Chief Minister, Shri Krishna Singh, also known as Shri Babu. An audience member interrupted the speech by shouting that Modi would not leave office. Kharge responded by saying that Modi's father would also leave, before asking the crowd to calm down. A BJP member has since submitted a formal police complaint regarding the entire episode.
Political Reactions
The remark drew sharp condemnation from senior ruling party leaders. Union Home Minister Amit Shah criticized the language as indecent and abusive, writing on social media that the opposition party is losing its base even among its own workers. Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary also labeled the language derogatory and demanded an immediate apology from Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress party, and Rahul Gandhi, calling such hostility toward the Prime Minister's family unacceptable.
Context
Political speeches at public anniversary events in India frequently draw intense media scrutiny and sharp counter-attacks from rival political parties. Such verbal clashes often become flashpoints in ongoing electoral battles between the ruling alliance and opposition groups.
