Nearly 20 years after the conclusion of "7th Heaven," original star Jessica Biel has provided new details regarding the show's upcoming reboot and her role as a producer.

What Happened

Biel spoke on an episode of Collider Ladies Night about plans to modernize the series for today's audience by tackling issues like technology, school struggles, bullying, drugs, and alcohol in a direct way. She noted that while the original series gently touched on such topics, it faced many limitations that today's television landscape does not have. The original show was created by Brenda Hampton and produced by Aaron Spelling, debuting in 1996 on The WB and running for 11 seasons and nearly 250 episodes. It followed the Camden family in the fictional town of Glen Oak, California, where Eric served as a Protestant minister. Variety exclusively broke the news of the reboot in May 2025, reporting that the new version will focus on a diverse family and will not feature any of the original cast members.

Producer Goals

As a producer on the new project, Biel aims to build a safe and protective environment on set to help actors deliver emotional performances. She stated that she wants to foster free-flowing communication with the cast and crew so that people feel secure enough to be creative and vulnerable. Biel also mentioned that she and her husband look for television content they can watch with their kids, noting a lack of shows focused on family, community, and faith that are not overly cynical.

Context

Reboots of popular 1990s and 2000s television series have become a common strategy for networks and streaming platforms looking to draw in nostalgic viewers while updating classic premises for modern audiences. The original "7th Heaven" was a defining family drama for The WB network before concluding in 2007.
