Mahindra has rolled out a fresh update for its popular SUV, giving the new Thar OG mechanical upgrades, design tweaks and added interior features to make it more user-friendly in cities while keeping its rugged identity intact.

Design And Platform

At the front, halogen lights are replaced by LED headlamps featuring C-shaped DRLs, alongside a redesigned grille and bumper with front parking sensors. The vehicle is built on a new Gen 4 chassis called M-Glyde, which is also used by the Roxx. It rolls on new 19-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tyres and features C-shaped LED taillamps and a rear camera placed inside the spare wheel.

Interior And Comfort

The cabin gets subtle changes, highlighted by a new top-spec ZXT trim that includes brown leatherette upholstery with contrast stitching. Rear passengers now receive dedicated air-conditioning vents, a USB-C charging port, and armrests made of soft plastic that feature cup-holders. However, the boot space remains tight, requiring the second row of seats to be folded down for large bags or airport runs.

Performance And Safety

The tested 2.2-litre diesel engine paired with a six-speed automatic gearbox now produces 152 horsepower and 330 Newton-metres of torque, marking an increase of 18 horsepower and 30 Newton-metres over the older version. For safety, the ZXT trim includes six new HPTS airbags covering the head, pelvis, thorax, and shoulder, as well as rear disc brakes and a retuned electronic stability program.

Ride And Pricing

Under the body, the SUV features a new rear pentalink suspension with a Watts linkage and DAVINCI dampers to reduce bouncing on rough roads. The electronic power steering allows for easy turning at low speeds while gaining firmness as the vehicle accelerates. Prices for the Thar OG start at Rs 10.32 lakh, with the top ZXT trim starting at Rs 13.99 lakh for the 1.5-litre rear-wheel-drive variant, while the tested diesel automatic model costs Rs 18.99 lakh.
