All India Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has reached out to top opposition leaders, including Congress Lok Sabha leader Rahul Gandhi and CPIM leader MA Baby, to organize an INDIA bloc meeting in New Delhi regarding the ongoing controversy surrounding the Election Commission of India.
The Trigger And Response
The political storm began after a controversy erupted on Wednesday involving Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Banerjee released a video message demanding Kumar's immediate arrest and stating that protests will continue until he leaves his position. Following a proposal from CPIM, Banerjee agreed to join forces and began contacting opposition allies. While a final date for the Delhi meeting is yet to be fixed, TMC leaders confirmed that Banerjee is set to outline a roadmap for protests against the ECI and the BJP during a public meeting in Serampore, Hooghly.
Reactions And Political Fallout
TMC MP Mahua Moitra warned that party workers will soon hit the streets to protest. Meanwhile, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury noted that Banerjee previously chose to fight elections alone, but stated that the high command will discuss her renewed outreach. BJP leader Dilip Ghosh criticized the move, remarking that Banerjee should travel to Delhi since political options in the state are narrowing.
