UPDATE - follow-up to United States Grand Prix: Formula One – live: Racing action heats up in Austin as leader Kimi Antonelli holds a solid gap near the end of the grand prix, leading second-placed Leclerc by over 16 seconds on lap 48. Charles Leclerc moved up to second after passing Max Verstappen following a wide turn at turn 11. Verstappen had earlier fought his way past Lando Norris into third place, while Lewis Hamilton overtook Norris to take fourth place on lap 51, keeping his slim championship hopes alive by staying in fourth.
Action and Retirements
Earlier in the race, Franco Colapinto retired on lap 37, and Bearman served a 10-second penalty before also retiring on lap 29. Antonelli picked up a track limits violation while trying to lap Sainz, but the 20-year-old Italian continued to drive a comfortable race after taking his pit stop earlier on lap 25. Meanwhile, George Russell ran in eighth place, maintaining a healthy lead over ninth-placed Lawson to keep the title fight active heading toward the next grand prix in Mexico.
Context
Formula One races run over a fixed number of laps where tire strategy, pit stops, and track position dictate the final order. Drivers battle for championship points that determine both the driver and constructor standings over the course of a full global season.
