Photo: Openverse - wikimediaKotak Mahindra Bank reported a standalone loan book growth of 19 percent year-on-year to 5.5 trillion rupees in the second quarter, but weaker returns on equity may challenge its high stock valuation compared to larger rivals.
Financial Performance
Standalone loan growth reached 5.5 trillion rupees, excluding the transfer of Kotak Mahindra Investments' portfolio and FCNR(B) deposit loans worth 16,110 crore rupees. Net interest margin slipped 22 basis points sequentially to 4.31 percent, while core pre-provisioning operating profit rose 20 percent to 6,115 crore rupees. Fee and service income increased 21 percent to 2,926 crore rupees, and reported deposit growth stood at 23 percent year-on-year.
Challenges and Outlook
Fresh slippages dropped to 1,230 crore rupees in the second quarter, but management noted that credit costs could rise by 12 to 15 basis points once expected credit loss norms take effect in fiscal year 2028. Kotak Bank's return on equity of 11.6 percent trailed ICICI Bank at 16.6 percent and HDFC Bank at 13.5 percent. Despite this gap, Kotak trades at a price-to-earnings multiple of 15 based on fiscal year 2027 estimates, compared to 13 for ICICI Bank and 10 for HDFC Bank.
Context
Return on equity measures how efficiently a company uses investments to generate profit growth. Banking stocks often trade at different valuation multiples based on their profitability, asset quality, and future growth prospects relative to industry peers.
ExplainerWhy this matters
What Happened
Kotak Mahindra Bank posted solid core loan and profit growth in the second quarter but continues to lag behind its peers in return on equity while maintaining a higher valuation multiple.
Why It Matters
Investors closely watch return on equity as a key measure of a bank's profitability and capital efficiency. When a bank trades at a higher valuation multiple despite lower returns than its competitors, it faces pressure to improve its financial performance to justify that premium.
What Happens Next
Analysts will monitor whether expected credit loss norms in fiscal year 2028 and potential margin pressures from deposit shifts impact profitability and whether the bank can close the return on equity gap with larger rivals.
