UPDATE - follow-up to Nedumbassery luxury car crash: Audio clip of an accused describing incident emerges as possible key evidence: The Ernakulam Additional District Court has reserved its verdict on the bail pleas of four accused individuals for October 28.
Bail Pleas And Audio Evidence
Police presented a digital audio clip in court on Monday, October 26, 2026, to block the bail requests. In the recording, co-passenger Joyal S., who fled the scene, allegedly told a friend that driver Suhail Sajeev was heavily drunk and driving at 165 kilometres per hour before hitting three youths on a scooter on October 11. The crash killed Devika, 21, Gopika, 22, and Ijaz, 21. While prosecutors sought more time for interrogation, the defence argued that further custody is unnecessary and abetment charges against the other three passengers do not apply.
Arrests And Investigation
Police arrested four 19-year-olds after the crash: Suhail Sajeev, Ninav, Ameen Sha, and Joyal S. Investigators state Suhail visited three bars beforehand, and his blood alcohol level was five times the legal limit. The Excise Department has suspended the licences of those three bars for serving an underage person. Meanwhile, officers have tracked down a key eyewitness who is an online cab driver, though tracing other witnesses remains difficult.
Context
Bail hearings typically focus on whether a release could lead to witness tampering or interference with ongoing police work. Courts often deny bail in high-profile fatal accidents when key material witnesses are yet to be examined and investigations remain active.
