Actor Sanusha Santhosh entered the film industry as a child artiste born to parents Usha and Santhosh in Pallikkunnu, Kannur, making her debut in director Vinayan's Mammootty-starrer Dada Sahib. She quickly gained mass attention and won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Child Artist for her roles in Kaazhcha and Soumyam. Early in her career, she also starred in popular films like Meesa Madhavan, Ente Veedu Appuvinteyum, Manjupoloru Penkutti, Maampazhakkaalam, and Chotta Mumbai, with many predicting she would become a leading heroine.

Career Transition and Setbacks

After taking an intentional break from acting in Class 8 to focus on studies, Sanusha debuted as a lead actor in the Tamil film Naalai Namadhe, followed by roles in Renigunta, Eththan, and Nandhi. She made her Malayalam lead debut in Mr Marumakan opposite Dileep, a film that faced heavy criticism for its age gap and misogyny. Despite earning critical acclaim for playing a pregnant woman in Zachariayude Garbhinikal, her subsequent films like Sapthamashree Thaskaraha, Mili, Nirnayakam, Vettah, Santheyalli Nintha Kabira, Kodiveeran, Jersey, and Jaladhara Pumpset Since 1962 failed to elevate her career to major heights.

Personal Struggles and Education

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Sanusha battled severe depression, anxiety, panic attacks, and suicidal thoughts before seeking help and spending time in Wayanad with a friend. In 2018, she fought off a man who harassed her on a moving train to Thiruvananthapuram, leading to an arrest by the Thrissur railway police. Alongside her film journey, she earned a Bachelor's degree in Commerce from SN College, Kannur, a Master's degree in Sociology from St Teresa's College, Ernakulam, and an MSc in Global Mental Health and Society from the University of Edinburgh in 2023. Her brother, Sanoop Santhosh, was also a celebrated child actor who won a state award for Philips and the Monkey Pen.

Context

Child stars in the Indian film industry frequently encounter significant hurdles when trying to transition into adult lead roles because audiences continue to associate them with their younger characters. Beyond her acting pursuits, Sanusha now aims to apply her academic background in global mental health to drive positive societal change and support mental well-being initiatives in India.
