Direct Shopping Test
Google is testing a new shopping feature in India that allows users to buy products from Flipkart directly inside Gemini and AI Mode in Google Search. Selected product listings now show a 'Buy' button that opens a Flipkart checkout page right on the AI interface. This early test is limited to a small group of users and a small range of items like smartphones, electronics, and mobile accessories. Google plans a wider launch in October ahead of the festive shopping season. Rival companies like OpenAI and Meta are also adding commerce features to their AI platforms to help users buy items without leaving chat windows.
Industry Context And YouTube Updates
Amazon recently blocked Meta's AI agent from its site over privacy and security risks. A Google spokesperson said the company is always testing new features to help users connect with businesses. Meanwhile, Alphabet-owned YouTube announced new AI tools and shopping updates at its annual event in New York City. The platform is expanding its YouTube Shopping affiliate programme with Amazon in India, along with new partners like AJIO, Meesho, Snapdeal, and Tata CLiQ. YouTube reported that over 450 million users in India search for shopping content on the platform, with watch time growing 55 per cent year-over-year.
