WhatsApp is testing a new design for the bottom navigation bar on its Android app, aiming to give it a look similar to the iPhone version. The company previously moved main sections like Chats, Communities, Updates, and Calls to the bottom of the screen in beta version 2.23.10.6. Now, the platform is working on changes to the shape and appearance of these tabs and controls.

Design Changes

The updated Android navigation bar looks similar to the floating tab bar found on WhatsApp for iOS, which uses Apple's Liquid Glass design language. Even so, the app still follows Google's design rules on Android instead of copying Apple's style entirely. The new design is also easier to spot when the app is set to the light theme, while it is harder to notice in dark mode. This update follows complaints from Android users about the current interface. WABetaInfo recently asked for feedback on X, and many users said the app needs a more modern look.

Release Status

WhatsApp has not confirmed if user feedback caused this update, but the timing has caught people's attention. The company is also working on other changes, such as new categories for chat themes introduced in version 2.26.37.6. At this time, the new navigation bar is still in internal development and has not reached beta testers yet. WhatsApp has not shared when this new interface will be released to the public.
