UPDATE - follow-up to Defender 110 prices drop by up Rs 34 lakh with local assembly: Local assembly has brought down prices for the Defender 110 by up to Rs 34 lakh following a shift to the completely knocked down route.
Price Details
The price drop applies to the X-Dynamic HSE trim, which comes in three engine choices. Both the 3-litre diesel and 3-litre petrol versions now cost Rs 1.18 crore, marking a drop of Rs 34 lakh from the earlier price of Rs 1.52 crore for imported units. The 2-litre petrol version now costs Rs 99 lakh, dropping by Rs 14 lakh from Rs 1.13 crore.
Sales Impact
This vehicle was the top-selling model for JLR India in the financial year 2026 when it was still fully imported. Alongside this vehicle, select versions of the Range Rover, Sport, Velar, Evoque, and Discovery Sport are also assembled locally in the country. Together, the Defender, Range Rover, and Sport made up over 80 percent of total sales for the company in India during the last fiscal year.
Context
Assembling vehicles locally helps companies avoid heavy import duties imposed on fully built units brought into India from abroad. This reduction in tax burden typically allows carmakers to lower retail prices significantly and boost local sales volume. Major luxury car brands frequently use this strategy once a specific import model gains steady demand in the domestic market.
