New Engines
Suzuki has revealed plans for a new 1.5-litre, four-cylinder direct-injection turbo engine capable of producing 160 PS and 280 Nm of torque during its Technology Strategy Briefing in Japan. This larger motor sits alongside a smaller 1.2-litre three-cylinder unit designed to push out 125 to 126 horsepower and 230 Nm. Japanese automotive journalist Kota Sera noted that the 1.5-litre version is aimed at D-segment applications, suggesting its use in larger vehicles.
Fuel And Efficiency
Both engine sizes are designed to support alternative fuels like E100 ethanol, compressed natural gas, and compressed biomethane gas. Suzuki aims for a thermal efficiency of over 40 percent by the year 2030 using technologies such as the Miller cycle and high compression ratios. A later phase around 2035 targets thermal efficiency exceeding 50 percent through dedicated hybrid development and lean combustion. The company also showcased series-hybrid powertrains, 48V hybrids, and plug-in systems.
Context
These engine developments are part of Suzuki's broader technology strategy aimed at growth markets including India, where Maruti Suzuki could use them to boost performance and fuel flexibility in future SUVs and smaller cars. Transverse-mounted layouts form the basis of these showcased powertrains for front-wheel-drive vehicles.
