Kimi Antonelli moved to the brink of the Formula 1 world championship after claiming his ninth victory of the year at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. Mercedes overcame a tricky Friday practice session where they struggled to understand their upgraded 2026-spec car, but Antonelli bounced back to secure pole position on Saturday with a stunning lap.
The Race
Starting on medium tires against Max Verstappen on the grippier soft compound, Antonelli executed a flawless getaway to take control. He crossed the finish line 13.078 seconds clear of Charles Leclerc to secure the victory. To clinch the title in Austin, Antonelli needed Lewis Hamilton to finish fifth or lower and George Russell to finish ninth or lower. Hamilton finished fourth and Russell finished eighth, delaying the championship coronation. Antonelli now needs just two points in Mexico, meaning a ninth-place finish will make him the youngest driver to win the title and the first Italian champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
Reactions
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff described it as Antonelli's best race of the season, calling him a champion who is not yet officially the champion. Wolff revealed that Antonelli sneaked into his office before the race and admitted he was not thinking about the championship at all. Meanwhile, teammate George Russell endured a miserable weekend. Outqualified by nearly half a second, Russell finished nearly 55 seconds behind and picked up a five-second penalty that added to his struggles. Russell called the penalty a bit ridiculous, though he admitted it was the least of his worries after such a difficult weekend.
Context
Formula 1 drivers must manage tire degradation, pit stop strategies, and unpredictable weather across a global race calendar consisting of over twenty grands prix. Mercedes remains one of the most successful constructors in the sport's recent history, having secured multiple consecutive world championships. Young drivers entering F1 face intense media scrutiny, making psychological preparation and a strong support network vital for consistent performance.
