The Villa Vie Odyssey suspended its global voyage and left about 200 passengers stranded in Cambodia due to soaring fuel costs. The ship, measuring nearly 200 metres, had been at sea for more than 750 days after departing Belfast in October 2024 for a planned 3.5-year journey across nearly 150 countries.

Rising Costs

Global fuel prices spiked following the war involving Iran, with marine gas oil in Singapore climbing to $1,339 a metric ton from about $700. Monthly fuel costs per cabin in parts of Asia jumped from $1,800 to as much as $8,000, while overall monthly operating costs for the company rose by about 50 percent to $3 million. Founder Mikael Petterson said the company tried slowing the itinerary and spending more time in port to save fuel, but those steps were not enough.

Passenger Impact

The US-based operator is working with residents on disembarkation plans and temporary living arrangements in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, while covering lodging and local transport. Passengers were asked to chip in for fuel to leave Cambodia or pay an extra $500 a month plus a fuel surcharge, but they balked at the request. Some travelers, like Holly Hennessey and her cat, are staying in local hotels to see if the ship sails again, while others decided to travel on land.

Restructuring

The company will spend the next 60 days on restructuring and recapitalization while seeking financing to leave the area, though no outcome is assured. The ship offers permanent residencies costing between $120,000 and $440,000, alongside monthly rental options starting at $3,500.

Context

Sharp increases in oil and fuel prices quickly ripple through the global economy, raising the cost of travel by ship, plane, and car while feeding into wider inflation. Long-term cruise models depend heavily on stable operating budgets, leaving companies vulnerable to sudden geopolitical shocks that disrupt international shipping lanes.
