The Record-Breaking Share Issue

Jio Platforms has broken global records with its public share issue, pulling in massive demand from investors. The company aimed to raise 30,213 crore rupees by offering 27 crore new shares, with the price of a single share set between 1,065 rupees and 1,119 rupees. When the share issue opened on the 21st, applications equal to the entire target amount poured in within the first 100 minutes. By the time the share issue closed, investors applied for 22.19 times more shares than what was offered, bringing in over 1.38 crore applications worth 7.5 lakh crore rupees. This makes Jio the first public share issue in the world to receive more than one crore applications.

Use of Funds and Future Steps

Akash Ambani, the chairman of Jio, stated that the money raised from this share sale will pay off all bank loans completely, making Jio Platforms a debt-free company. Any money left over after clearing these debts will go toward the general expenses of the company. The shares of Jio Platforms are scheduled to be listed on the 28th.

Background and Growth

Founder Dhirubhai Ambani started his career in spices and polyester yarn trade, later launching a textile mill named Vimal before entering the petroleum and gas sectors. His son Mukesh Ambani later took over leadership, during which the Jamnagar oil refinery in Gujarat grew into the largest oil refinery in the world. A major turning point in the company's journey came from the birth of Jio. While studying at Yale University in America, Mukesh Ambani's daughter Isha Ambani came to Mumbai on holiday and struggled to submit her college homework due to slow internet speeds. She wondered why India did not have the fast internet found in America, and Mukesh Ambani shared in a 2018 event that this question sparked the creation of Jio. Jio started its business service in 2016 and shook up the Indian telecom sector with free calls and cheap internet. By August, it grew into a massive company with over 53.8 crore customers.

Context

Large companies often issue public shares to raise money from the public and clear their debts, helping them grow faster. Jio's rapid expansion highlights how cheap mobile data changed the daily digital habits of hundreds of millions of people across India over the past decade.
