Jio Platforms Limited made a strong stock market debut on Wednesday, listing at ₹1,358 per share, which is a 21.36% premium over its issue price of ₹1,119. The stock extended gains to close at ₹1,417.50 on the National Stock Exchange.

Market Debut

The blockbuster ₹32,000-crore public issue was subscribed more than 22 times and attracted demand exceeding ₹7.4 lakh crore. The offering received over one crore applications and was fully subscribed within 100 minutes of opening on October 21. According to the Indian Express, the issue was exclusively a fresh issue aimed at raising ₹30,213 crores, with funds directed toward repaying subsidiary debts and general corporate purposes. At the listing ceremony, Akash Ambani called the IPO a starting line and stated that the public response surpassed his expectations.

Market Standing

With a market capitalisation of around ₹12.5 lakh crore, JPL overtook Bharti Airtel to become India's second-most-valued listed company after parent Reliance Industries. This debut took place while the broader market faced pressure, as the Sensex closed 352.64 points lower due to rising crude oil prices, selling in IT stocks, and caution ahead of a U.S. Federal Reserve decision. Analysts expect revenue growth from tariff hikes and 5G monetisation, though valuation sustainability and competition remain concerns.

Context

Stock market listings allow private companies to raise capital from public investors by offering shares on public exchanges like the NSE. A high listing-day premium shows that investors are willing to pay significantly more than the official issue price due to high demand and strong growth expectations.
