At least ten people have died in central Spain after a collision involving two high-speed trains. The crash took place on Wednesday morning, October 28, 2026, in the province of Toledo between the towns of Mora and Orgaz.
The Accident
Spain's rail system operator ADIF confirmed the incident, which has forced the suspension of rail service between Madrid, Ciudad Real, and Andalusia. Spanish state broadcaster TVE reported that both trains were heading in the same direction when one train ran into the tail of the other, knocking two of its cars off the track.
Local Impact
Manuel Galán, the mayor of the nearby town of Urda, told TVE that passengers suffered injuries and that civil protection authorities asked his town hall to set up a sports pavilion to help them. Jesus Perez, the mayor of another nearby village named Los Yébenes, also told TVE that the accident appeared serious. Emiliano García-Page, the regional president of Castilla La Mancha, posted on X that he was heading directly to the crash site.
Context
Spain operates a large high-speed rail network that connects major cities across the country. Train accidents of this scale are rare on modern high-speed lines, but previous incidents have severely shaken public confidence in rail safety.
