A Central Bureau of Investigation special court will pronounce its verdict on November 12 in the murder case of Indian Union Muslim League worker Abdul Shukkoor. Shukkoor was 21 years old when he was killed by a group of attackers at Keezhara in Kannur on February 20, 2012.

Case Background

The 21-year-old victim and four other youths were attacked after taking shelter in a house at Keezhara. A group of Communist Party of India (Marxist) workers forced them out of the house, took photos using mobile phones, and verified their identities. Three youths were released after verification, but Shukkoor and Zakaria were taken to a nearby field and stabbed. Zakaria escaped with injuries, while Shukkoor died from his wounds. The attack was reportedly carried out to take revenge for an earlier assault on CPI(M) leader P. Jayarajan and former MLA T.V. Rajesh that same morning.

Accused Leaders

The case gained major political importance when Mr. Jayarajan, who served as the former Kannur district secretary of the CPI(M), and Mr. Rajesh, a former MLA and former state secretary of the Democratic Youth Federation of India, were named as accused numbers 32 and 33. Investigators found they allegedly had prior knowledge of the murder plot, which was supposedly planned inside a room at the Taliparamba Co-operative Hospital where they were admitted after the morning attack on Mr. Jayarajan's convoy by alleged IUML workers. The court earlier refused to cancel the trial proceedings against them. Out of 33 total accused people in the case, two have passed away.

Investigation History

The Kerala High Court ordered a CBI investigation into the killing in 2016 after accepting a petition from Shukkoor's mother, A.C. Aathikka. She argued that the police failed to gather evidence about the criminal conspiracy involving Mr. Jayarajan and Mr. Rajesh. While other accused individuals faced charges related to conspiracy, both leaders were charged under Section 118 of the Indian Penal Code for concealing a plan to commit an offense that carries the death penalty or life imprisonment.

Context

High-profile criminal cases involving prominent political figures often face prolonged legal battles through multiple court levels before reaching a final judgment. The involvement of investigative agencies like the CBI usually follows petitions from family members seeking deeper probes into alleged conspiracies. Verdicts in such sensitive cases are closely watched by local communities and political groups alike.
