Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has strongly criticised Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi over his recent comments claiming that Tata is being criminally destroyed. Responding to a post by Mr. Gandhi on X, Ms. Sitharaman stated that labelling commercial and legal matters as criminal is unacceptable and urged him to stop politicising every issue. Mr. Gandhi had earlier accused the government of letting business leaders stay silent out of fear and stated that Indian business is not a plaything for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah. In her reply, Ms. Sitharaman accused Mr. Gandhi of trying to incite business leaders to join him in spreading distrust and toxicity while repeatedly decrying the successes of Indian entrepreneurs.
Background
Ms. Sitharaman blamed the Congress party for smothering the spirit of Indian entrepreneurs for decades under the Licence-Quota Raj and inflicting poverty on millions of citizens. In contrast, she said the current government views industry as a vital driver of economic growth and job creation, with policies tailored to support enterprise and encourage investment.
Context
Public disagreements between senior ruling party ministers and opposition leaders often centre on India's economic policies and the historical impact of past government regimes. The Congress party governed India for decades under regulatory frameworks that were later liberalised in the 1990s to encourage private enterprise.
