Advanced Micro Devices will acquire World Labs, an artificial intelligence startup founded by Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock deal worth 8.2 billion dollars. The purchase gives the chipmaker a direct entry into research on physical AI, which involves systems that can understand and simulate the world. World Labs focuses on spatial intelligence, helping AI model three-dimensional environments and physical interactions to shape future demand for chips, software, and AI infrastructure.

Partnership

Fei-Fei Li stated on LinkedIn that the two companies started a deep technical partnership last year with model training and inference optimization on AMD GPUs. She noted that both teams realized it was a natural fit to combine their software and hardware ecosystems, foundation models, and applications. World Labs secured one billion dollars in a funding round earlier this year, which also included an investment from AMD.

Leadership

Li, a well-known AI researcher recognized for her work in computer vision, will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist once the transaction closes. She will report directly to AMD Chief Executive Officer Lisa Su. The deal is scheduled to close by the end of 2026.

Context

This major acquisition highlights how traditional hardware manufacturers are buying specialized AI research teams to secure their position in future computing markets. Spatial intelligence and physical AI represent a growing frontier for technology companies looking to expand beyond standard text and image processing into robotics and real-world simulations.
