Protests And Police Action
Aam Aadmi Party leaders and workers are holding heavy protests in Delhi to demand a police case against Parvesh Verma. The agitation started after a video came out showing Delhi PWD Minister Parvesh Verma allegedly slapping a young man during a road inspection. The man who was hit is said to be a social media helper for AAP MLA Jarnail Singh. On Monday, Delhi Police filed a non-cognisable report against Verma over the slapping event. At the same time, police registered a formal FIR against AAP MLA Jarnail Singh for allegedly stopping public servants from doing their duty. Police officers also stopped AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj at a barricade near the LIC roundabout, announcing that the area is prohibited and ordering protestors to leave. Police are also forcibly removing protestors from the spot.
Traffic And Restrictions
The ongoing protests have caused heavy traffic jams at the Sacred Heart Cathedral roundabout. Police have blocked all roads that lead to the Police Headquarters with barricades.
Context
Political protests in the national capital frequently lead to heavy traffic disruptions and road closures when police set up barricades to block access to sensitive government buildings. Such demonstrations often follow video-recorded altercations between rival political figures, drawing swift police interventions and cross-complaints from both sides.
