Aishwarya Rai once lost her roles in several upcoming films with Shah Rukh Khan without receiving any explanation. The two actors had previously worked together in movies like Josh, Mohabbatein and Devdas. Their professional relationship hit a rough patch when Shah Rukh removed her from multiple projects, most notably the 2003 film Chalte Chalte where Rani Mukerji replaced her midway through shooting.

The Fallout

During an old interview on the show Rendezvous with Simi Garewal, Aishwarya admitted she felt hurt and confused by the sudden removal. She stated that she never asked Shah Rukh for a reason because it was not in her nature to question someone's choices. Reports from that period also suggested that Salman Khan created disturbances on the sets due to personal issues, though neither Shah Rukh nor Aishwarya ever confirmed this claim.

Producer's Regret

Shah Rukh later admitted in a 2003 interaction with India Today that replacing Aishwarya was a mistake and a very difficult decision. He stated that he apologized to her and felt sorry as a friend, but explained that his hands were tied as a producer because other production partners like UTV and a team of people were involved in the collective choice. He also noted that their production company at the time was struggling financially and had a lot at stake. Despite the past rift, the two actors later shared the screen again in the 2016 film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.

Context

Bollywood actors and filmmakers often face complex choices when personal equations cross paths with high-stakes film production and financial pressures. Industry partnerships and multi-producer setups mean that casting decisions sometimes involve team consensus rather than just the lead actor's personal wish. Such past controversies frequently resurface online when old interview clips are shared on social media platforms.
