Mohit Sharma has been named the bowling coach of the Chennai Super Kings. The move follows Zaheer Khan’s appointment as head coach, a change expected after the franchise handed him authority to pick his own staff. CSK chief executive officer Kasi Viswanathan said Zaheer personally selected Sharma for the role. The 38‑year‑old former India seamer, who played for the Super Kings in the early years of his brief India career, will replace Eric Simons, who had been part of the coaching set‑up under long‑time head coach Stephen Fleming.
Support Staff Updates
Zaheer, who was confirmed as head coach last week, is reviewing the entire support panel. One overseas candidate is in the pipeline, and the batting coach position may stay with an overseas expert. Physios and trainers will also be chosen by Zaheer. Assistant coaches Sridharan Sriram and Rajiv Kumar are expected to continue in their roles. Fleming, who led CSK since 2009, left the club by mutual agreement after the team missed the playoffs for three straight seasons, ending his stint at the conclusion of the MLC in July.
Transfer Rumours
The franchise has stated it is not engaged in any trade talks with other teams. The much‑rumoured transfer of Hardik Pandya to Chennai has been described as a non‑starter, with CSK not pursuing the player.
Context
CSK’s staffing overhaul aims to address the on‑field shortcomings that kept the side out of the playoffs, while Zaheer’s own travel plans mean he will likely visit Chennai toward the end of October to finalize player retentions.
