Ravindra Jadeja faces uncertain ODI future as poor bowling form tests India's patience

Ravindra Jadeja is no longer an automatic choice in India's ODI team as his bowling numbers in the 50-over format have dropped significantly over the recent period.
Recent Form
During the first match of the three-match series against West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram, Jadeja bowled 10 overs and conceded 54 runs without taking a wicket. West Indies reached 135 runs for no loss inside the first 20 overs as batters Justin Greaves and John Campbell played him comfortably. This performance extended a poor run where he has taken only five wickets in his last 10 ODIs, including four wickets during the Champions Trophy in March 2025. In his last seven ODIs, he has claimed just one wicket, and in his last three matches before the West Indies game, he conceded 0/56, 0/44, and 0/41 while failing to bowl his full quota of 10 overs.
Selection Pressures
Jadeja only returned to the eleven because Axar Patel and Washington Sundar are away at the Asian Games, while other options like Harsh Dubey and Shahbaz Ahmed were injured. Axar and Washington have moved ahead of him in India's ODI setup. Furthermore, Jadeja has not scored a half-century in nearly six years and struggles to accelerate at the death in a top-heavy batting line-up.
Team Stance
Despite these struggles, spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule defended Jadeja before the second ODI, describing him as a utility player who contributes with both bat and ball and pointing to an improvement in his bowling over the last six months. The team management still values his experience and multi-discipline ability as the 2027 ODI World Cup approaches.
Context
International cricket teams constantly manage transitions between veteran players and younger all-rounders as formats evolve and major tournaments approach. Performance metrics in recent matches and competition from rising squad members heavily influence selection decisions in modern bilateral series.
