India won the women's 4x400m relay title at the Asian Games in Nagoya with a time of 3:29.69, securing the country's first and only track-and-field gold medal of the event.

The Four Runners

The winning quartet consisted of Kiran Pahal, Prachi Choudhary, M R Poovamma, and Vithya Ramraj, each coming from distinct personal struggles. Kiran's father previously fought their entire village in Sonipat to let her run. Prachi, a farmer's daughter from Saharanpur, sought a DSP post in the UP Police with her success. Poovamma returned to competition at age 36 after a doping ban and depression, aided by her husband and mother. Vithya, the daughter of an autorickshaw driver, had already broken a decades-old national record in the 400m hurdles earlier in the Games.

The Race

Running on a rain-soaked track at Mizuho Park, Kiran started slowly and handed the baton in third place. Poovamma used her decade-plus experience to make up ground and put India into the lead position. Prachi maintained the advantage during her leg, leaving Vithya to run the final lap. Bahrain's Salwa Eid Nasser closed the gap rapidly from last place, but Vithya held her ground to cross the finish line first ahead of Bahrain and China.

Medal Success

This victory crowned India's most successful day at the Nagoya Games so far. Other medalists on the same day included Neeru Dhanda, who won gold in women's trap shooting after being hospitalized ten days prior, Gulveer Singh who added a bronze to his two silvers, a high jump bronze, and Indian boxers advancing to the finals.

Context

India has a strong historical tradition in the women's 4x400m relay at the Asian Games, having secured multiple consecutive titles in past editions despite strong regional competition. Major multi-sport events like the Asian Games bring together top athletes from across the continent, where relay events often highlight both individual resilience and coordinated team effort.
