Indian boxer Ankush Panghal secured a spot in the Asian Games final after defeating reigning world champion Fazliddin Erkinboev of Uzbekistan by a 4-1 margin in the semifinal on Tuesday.
Strategy And The Match
Men's head coach CA Kutappa studied earlier footage to counter the Uzbek's strength against southpaws, devising a game plan using left jabs and right hooks. After losing the first round 4-1, Ankush adapted his tactics and landed effective left crosses and right hooks in the second round to take it 3-2. In the final round, he switched styles and fought from close and medium range to win 5-0. Ankush will now face Kim Minseong of Korea in the gold medal bout.
Women's Bouts
Parveen Hooda joined him by defeating China's Li Shu 5-0 in the 65kg class semifinal. After taking a close first round 3-2, Hooda dominated the remaining rounds using counterpunches, left jabs, and right hooks based on advice from women's head coach Santiago Nieva. She will face Paris Olympics bronze medallist Chen Nien-chin of Chinese Taipei in the final. Meanwhile, Narender Berwal earned a bronze medal in the +90kg category after a 0-5 loss to world champion Aibek Oralbay of Kazakhstan.
