Communist Party of India Marxist top official MA Baby faced police detention in Delhi on Tuesday during a demonstration outside the Election Commission office. Five separate Left political groups organised this action as part of a joint nation-wide push spanning from September 26 to October 2.

Demands

Protesters pressed for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar alongside an immediate halt to the Special Intensive Revision of voter lists. Demonstrators argued that this administrative process puts citizens' right to cast a ballot in danger. CPI leader Brinda Karat stated during the rally that the election chief must face removal since he will not step down voluntarily. Another party figure, Subhashini Ali, warned that daily protests will persist nationwide because the administration is violating core constitutional privileges.

Context

Electoral roll updates are routine administrative procedures managed by election panels to clean up voter lists, but they often spark political friction when opposition groups fear eligible citizens might get left out. India's election machinery operates independently to oversee polls, making any friction between political parties and the poll panel a frequent flashpoint during intense political cycles.
