Bajaj Auto plans to raise the monthly production of its Chetak electric scooter to about 80,000 units by the final quarter of financial year 2027. Joint Managing Director Rakesh Sharma shared this update after the release of the company's Q2 FY2027 results. He noted that market demand still remains higher than current output levels.

Production Updates

Production had previously dropped to about 40,000 units a month due to supply problems, even though the available capacity was 60,000 units. Sharma stated that operations are fully restored to capacity now. The firm aims to finish further bottleneck removals by the January-March 2027 quarter to reach the 80,000-unit target.

Expansion Plans

Capacity limits affect other areas too, including premium motorcycles and traditional internal combustion engine products. Bajaj is currently talking with multiple state governments to set up a sixth manufacturing plant. A special team is reviewing proposals across the country, though the company has not yet shared details on money spent, exact location, or timeline. At the same time, the Chetak lineup will grow over the next six months to offer more choices to buyers.

Market Growth

Electric scooters currently make up about 25 percent of all scooter sales in India. Sharma expects this share to grow to 50 percent within the next three to five years. Adoption rates differ a lot by state, reaching roughly 40 percent in Odisha and 35 percent in Maharashtra, but staying lower at 12 percent in Gujarat.

Context

Automobile companies often scale up their manufacturing capacity when growing customer demand outstrips what current factories can build. Electric vehicle adoption in India continues to grow as more buyers shift away from traditional fuel-powered vehicles, pushing major manufacturers to expand their production lines and build new facilities.
