UPDATE - follow-up to Hyundai entry-level EV for India expected to be called Ioniq P: Hyundai Motor Company plans to introduce its new compact electric SUV with the expected Ioniq P name following the Bayon, with an official debut slated for January 2027.
Market Goals and Setup
India's electric passenger vehicle sales have jumped nearly 90 percent so far in FY27. Tarun Garg, managing director of Hyundai Motor India, stated that the firm wants to bring its EV market share closer to the industry average in FY28. The upcoming mass-market vehicle will be built on the E-GMP (K) platform and manufactured at the company plant in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu. It will compete against models like the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV 3XO EV, and Kia Syros EV.
Features and Battery
The vehicle will likely come in standard-range and long-range versions. It will initially use imported battery cells because supplies from a partnership with Exide Industries will not begin this year. Confirmed features include a next-generation infotainment system and Level 2 assisted driving technology.
Context
Automakers in India are expanding their electric vehicle portfolios as consumer demand shifts toward eco-friendly cars. Local sourcing of parts like batteries remains a key strategy for brands trying to keep vehicle prices competitive.
