Docuseries on Matthew Perry launches without any former Friends cast members

The One About Matthew Perry, a three‑part documentary series directed by Emmy‑winning filmmaker Mary Robertson, premieres without participation from any of Perry’s former F.R.I.E.N.D.S cast members. The series relies on Perry’s own voice taken from past interviews, which forms the narrative spine. Two longtime friends, Roger Castillo and David Pressman, provide personal anecdotes and dark‑humour that illustrate their bond with Perry. Perry’s half‑sister Mia Perry Bowick and the friends say they sensed his death was coming, noting his exhaustion after the 2021 Friends: The Reunion special as a warning sign. Their spokesperson brushed up‑turns in his speech as a dental problem, but close circles view it as the moment he decided to step back.

Reactions

Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer and Matt LeBlanc all declined to appear, saying their involvement would have shifted focus away from Perry’s story. Aniston broke down when asked about re‑watching Friends after his death during a Variety interview in June 2024. Kudrow admitted she avoided the show until after his passing as a way to remember him. The documentary also touches on Perry’s brief public romance with Julia Roberts after her cameo, and references his 2022 memoir – a candid account of his battles with addiction, alcoholism and depression that began after an on‑set skiing accident and the post‑Friends lull.

Context

The series joins a growing trend of posthumous documentaries that let the subject’s own words drive the story, while friends choose silence to keep the focus on the individual’s personal journey.
