Tata Motors plans to launch the new Safari EV in January 2027 as its upcoming flagship electric vehicle. The company currently leads the electric passenger car market in India. The new SUV will be built on the Acti.ev+ platform, which also supports the Harrier EV. The vehicle will come in both six-seater and seven-seater versions.

Battery and Range

The Safari EV may offer battery packs of 65 kWh and 75 kWh, similar to the Harrier EV. Reports suggest top trims could also feature a larger 80 kWh battery pack. This large battery option could give the SUV the highest range among all Tata electric cars. The Harrier EV already claims a range of 627 km for rear-wheel-drive variants and 622 km for all-wheel-drive variants. The Safari EV will also be available in both rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive formats.

Performance and Features

Performance numbers are expected to match the Harrier EV. Rear-wheel-drive variants use a single motor producing 238 PS and 315 Nm of torque. All-wheel-drive variants use a 158 PS front motor and a 238 PS rear motor, producing 504 Nm of torque. Exterior changes include a closed-off grille, aero-optimized alloy wheels, and exclusive badging. Inside, the vehicle could feature a triple screen layout, ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control, a powered tailgate, a 540-degree surround view camera, and a Level 2 ADAS suite.

Pricing and Competition

The starting price for the Safari EV is expected to be around Rs 20 lakh, while top variants could reach Rs 30 to 32 lakh. The SUV will compete with the Mahindra XEV 9S, which starts at Rs 20.65 lakh with top variants using a 79 kWh battery, and the MG Hector Tomahawk EV, priced at Rs 19.49 lakh with a 69.2 kWh battery and a 517 km range.

Context

Automakers in India are expanding their electric vehicle lineups to capture growing consumer demand for clean mobility. Large electric SUVs offer long-range capabilities to suit intercity travel needs. Competition in this segment continues to grow as major brands introduce dedicated electric platforms.
