UPDATE - follow-up to Milk price hiked in Karnataka: The price of Nandini milk will increase by eight rupees per litre across Karnataka starting November 1, 2026. The State Cabinet approved this hike on October 29 after dairy farmers asked for a higher procurement price. Out of the eight-rupee increase, seven rupees will go directly to farmers, and one rupee will go to the Karnataka Milk Federation.
Background
Farmers asked for this change because of higher farming costs and drought conditions in the state. The government delayed the decision earlier due to the election code of conduct for Legislative Council polls, which ended when results came out on October 27. District milk unions had met Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar to push for the price rise, while MLC Basavaraj Horatti wrote letters opposing it to protect low-income households from extra financial strain.
Context
Milk price adjustments in government-backed cooperatives are typically designed to support local dairy farmers during periods of agricultural distress or rising operational expenses. Such decisions often require state cabinet approval because these federations operate under public administration. Consumers can generally expect a ripple effect on everyday food and beverage costs following such essential commodity price revisions.
