The Tata Altroz hatchback has reached a total of 3,49,185 units sold in India by the end of September 2026, putting it right at the edge of the 3.5-lakh sales milestone since its launch in January 2020. Wholesale data from SIAM shows the vehicle missed that exact mark by just 815 units, a figure it crossed soon after in October, maintaining a daily average of roughly 96 units sold during the July to September quarter.

Sales Journey

Total sales since introduction represent over a third of Tata Motors' passenger car volume and about 10 percent of its overall passenger vehicles. Launching just before the pandemic in FY2020 with 8,458 units, the model quickly scaled to cross sixty thousand deliveries in both FY2021 and FY2022. Following a 7 percent dip to 57,819 units in FY2023, the hatchback hit its peak performance in FY2024 by jumping 21 percent to 70,162 units, aided by the arrival of a CNG variant in May 2023. That year also made it the eighth best-selling passenger car nationwide.

Market Shifts

Volume dropped sharply to 35,187 units in FY2025 as the manufacturer's total passenger car sales fell by a third, alongside declines for the Tiago and Tigor models. Demand recovered by 8 percent to reach 38,153 units in FY2026, supported by a vehicle facelift in May 2025 and price reductions of up to Rs 98,000 following GST 2.0 changes. During the first half of FY2027, the car recorded 16,780 sales, which is down 20 percent compared to the same timeframe previously.

Pricing And Variants

Showroom prices currently sit between Rs 6.00 lakh and Rs 10.75 lakh across seven trim levels and multiple configurations. Buyers can select an 88hp 1.2-litre petrol engine, a 90hp 1.5-litre diesel motor, or a 74hp CNG setup paired with manual, automated manual, or dual-clutch automatic gearboxes. This lineup makes it the sole hatchback in the country currently sold with a diesel engine option. Discontinued variants over the years include the iTurbo from January 2021 and the Altroz Racer introduced in June 2024. Market rivals consist of the Hyundai i20, Maruti Baleno, and Toyota Glanza.

Context

Automotive sales figures in India are typically tracked through wholesale data reported by industry bodies like SIAM to measure factory dispatches to dealerships rather than direct retail registration numbers. Hatchbacks remain a core segment in the domestic market, though consumer preferences have increasingly shifted toward compact SUVs over recent years. Price adjustments following tax revisions and periodic vehicle facelifts are standard industry strategies used by manufacturers to sustain buyer interest across aging product lifecycles.
