Director Karthik Subbaraj says a Rs 1,000 crore box office collection cannot be planned or manufactured by filmmakers. He argues that reaching that massive milestone is a rare phenomenon and a form of magic rather than a target a film can be built to achieve. Speaking on why the Tamil film industry has not yet produced a Rs 1,000 crore grosser while industries like Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada have, Subbaraj noted that makers of hits like KGF or Pushpa aimed for strong numbers rather than a fixed massive milestone.
Jailer 2 Success
Meanwhile, Tamil cinema's highest-grossing film of all time is Jailer 2, which earned Rs 755 crore worldwide in its first 14 days and remains in theatres. It surpassed the previous record held by Rajinikanth's 2.0 at roughly Rs 691 crore. Jailer 2 opened to Rs 59.70 crore net in India on Day 1 across 16,599 shows, beating the original Jailer opening of Rs 48.35 crore. Its advance booking reached Rs 57.30 crore with 29.69 lakh tickets sold across 31,812 screens. By Day 7, it crossed Rs 542 crore worldwide, and by Day 12, its total India net touched Rs 406.08 crore after crossing Rs 400 crore domestically.
Jana Nayagan Release
In contrast, actor Vijay's final film Jana Nayagan faced major hurdles. Scheduled for January 9, 2026, it faced delays due to a lack of CBFC clearance and was leaked online on April 9, leading to months of illegal piracy. It eventually released on July 23, months after Vijay took office as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Despite the compromised theatrical window, the movie opened to an estimated Rs 50 crore India gross, earned Rs 183 crore worldwide on Day 1, and finished with a worldwide collection of Rs 325 crore.
