New Investment Plans
The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation is preparing new guidelines to invest up to 3 percent of its annual fresh deposits into alternative investment funds. This move could connect the retirement savings of over 30 crore members with startups and private equity. The proposal was discussed during a meeting of the Securities and Exchange Board of India investment committee. According to reports, EPFO manages retirement savings worth about 30 lakh crore rupees.
Board Review And Fund Types
The central board of trustees will review this proposal in November. Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandviana heads this board. Under the plan, EPFO may invest in Sebi-registered category-one and category-two alternative investment funds. Category-one funds target startups, small businesses, infrastructure, and venture capital. Category-two funds include private equity, real estate, and private debt. In the early stages, EPFO is considering investing through the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund and the Small Industries Development Bank of India. Meanwhile, according to Jagran, EPFO is also considering a 25,000 crore rupee interest stabilisation reserve to protect member provident fund interest rates from market ups and downs.
Context
Provident fund organisations traditionally invest in safer options like government bonds and securities to protect worker savings. Exploring alternative investment funds allows large retirement bodies to chase higher growth while balancing new risks.

What Happens Next
The proposal will go before the central board of trustees in November for review and potential approval, after which final guidelines and rules will be decided.
