Varun Dhawan picked Ranveer Singh's performance in Dhurandhar over Ranbir Kapoor's work in Animal during an appearance on Koffee With Karan Season 9.

The Choice

During a rapid-fire round on the latest episode, host Karan Johar asked Varun to choose between Ranveer's role as undercover spy Hamza Ali Mazari in Dhurandhar and Ranbir's portrayal of Ranvijay Singh in Animal. Without hesitation, Varun answered that Ranveer delivered the more impactful performance. Janhvi Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor also featured on the episode. In an earlier episode of the same season, when Karan was asked to pick between the two actors for versatility, he stated that you do not choose between brilliance.

Past Regrets

During the show, Varun also looked back at a boastful comment he made on Koffee With Karan Season 6 in November 2018. When asked then about swapping careers with Ranbir or Ranveer, Varun had pointed to his box-office record of eight hits in a row. He admitted on the latest episode that the remark jinxed him, noting that the only thing worth showing off is the quality of one's work. Following that 2018 comment, films like Kalank, Street Dancer 3D, Coolie No. 1, and JugJugg Jeeyo delivered mixed box-office results for him.

Career Updates

Both Ranbir and Ranveer have delivered massive commercial hits recently. Animal earned ₹ 915 crore worldwide, while Ranbir prepares for Nitesh Tiwari's upcoming mythological epic Ramayana, which has a massive budget of ₹ 4000 crore and releases its first part on November 5, 2026. Meanwhile, the Dhurandhar franchise crossed ₹ 1300 crore globally, and Dhurandhar The Revenge became the first Indian film to reach ₹ 1000 crore at the domestic box office with ₹ 1800 crore worldwide. Varun's upcoming projects include Bhediya 2 and an untitled film directed by Rahul Pandey and backed by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, though official confirmation for the latter is still awaited.
